September 1, 2009: The translation policy has changed from Open to Structured to improve the quality of translations. If a LaunchPad language team exists for your language, please join it so you can approve translations.

August 24, 2009: Consider joining the Launchpad Translators mailing list to find out in advance when BleachBit will be released, so you can provide the translation.

August 11, 2009: BleachBit has appointed the Launchpad Translators group to manage translations and maintain quality using best practices. Please consider joining the appropriate language team there. Currently the policy allows anyone to translate, but in the future the policy may be changed to "structured," which means non-members' translations require approval by official members.

Requirements

  • You must read English well.
  • You must write well in your native language.
  • You need two hours (estimated) to translate about 950 English words. If someone has started translating this language, there will be less work. If you do not have time to translate all the strings, please first translate those marked GUI.py. Also focus on strings with many locations listed in "Located in." It is OK to translate some strings but not others.
  • You are encouraged to join a Launchpad translation team. If a language team exists for your language, membership is required to approve translations.

Procedure

Follow this procedure:

  1. Create a Launchpad account if you don't already have one. BleachBit (and many other projects) use Launchpad to manage translations. Your Launchpad account name will be given credit for the translation in the BleachBit release notes (unless you email me otherwise), so keep this in mind when picking the account name.
  2. Join a language team under Launchpad Translators if one exists for your language.
  3. Visit the BleachBit translation page to type translations.
  4. Click on your language.
  5. Change All items to Untranslated items and click Change.
  6. Type and save your translations.

Items marked for review are not shown in BleachBit.

Verifying translations

There are several ways to verify your translation. (If you are confident in your work, you may skip these steps.)

  • Use the spell checker in your web browser as you type new translations. (Firefox has a nice spell checker.)
  • Make Firefox spell check non-form text with a trick.
  • Download your translation and use your word processor. From the BleachBit translations page, click Download, choose your language, choose selected files, choose PO format, and download. Check your email for the link. Download the file. Rename it to from .po to .txt. Open it in your word processor for spell checking. Make any changes in Launchpad.
  • Download the translation and load it in to BleachBit to see the translations in context. From the BleachBit translations page, click Download, choose your language, choose selected files, choose MO format, and download. Check your email for the link. Download the file. Rename the file to your your locale code (Spanish is es.mo, for example). Move this file to /usr/share/locale/(your locale code)/LC_MESSAGES/ (Linux) or c:\Program Files\BleachBit\share\locale\(your locale code)\LC_MESSAGES (Windows). Run BleachBit.

Understanding context

If you are not clear on how to translate a string, you have several options:

  • Download and run BleachBit to understand the context.
  • Look for hints. Hints in the source code are copied to the .pot, and Launchpad automatically displays them like this: Launchpad showing translation tip for the word 'vacuum'
  • If you have any programming skills, cross reference the source code. The screenshot below indicates you should look in directory bleachbit in the file CleanerBackend on line 170. (The line numbers are sometimes out of sync with the latest SVN trunk.)
  • Ask in the forum.
  • Email Andrew (using the link in the footer of this web page).

Version mismatch

Some strings in Launchpad may not yet exist in the version of BleachBit packaged for download because these strings are intended for the upcoming release. See "Contribute" if you wish to run the latest, unreleased version.

License

Translations must be licensed under the GNU GPL v3+, the BSD license (without the advertising clause), or both.

Updates

BleachBit is under active development, so please check back twice a month for new strings to translate. Consider joining the Launchpad Translators mailing list to find out in advance when BleachBit will be released or look for beta releases on the the news feed.
